Tween & Teen Food Programming for Large and Small Groups
Thursday October 8, 2026 1:30pm - 2:20pm PDT
"If you feed them, they will come", join me in exploring different options for food programming for tweens & teens in the library, ask questions, and brainstorm with peers about more food programming ideas! This presentation will focus on food programming that has been presented at the Marion Public Library to the tweens & teens. Getting this age group into libraries can be notoriously difficult, but many libraries and librarians will agree that "if you feed them, they will come" is an apt way to get them into the library.
`
Over the past couple of years, our food programming has evolved and expanded at the Marion Public Library thanks in part to our culinary kitchen. From Peep science experiments (with extra Peeps for them to snack on) to Tween & Teen Cooking/Baking classes to Kitchen Safety with our local Fire Department, we have more food programs than ever.

This session will give ideas for future food programming for teens & tweens. It will allow fellow librarians to weigh in on what their experiences have been if they have done similar programs. It will discuss the difference between open attendance programs and those that require registration. It will also talk about how to create and maintain partnerships in order to get food into the hands and into fun and engaging programs.

Digital Safety Lab: Practical Ways to Talk to Patrons about the Scary Parts of the Internet
Thursday October 8, 2026 4:00pm - 4:50pm PDT
The internet can be intimidating, and it's becoming more complex to navigate each year. Opting out of technology is no longer a realistic option, and even those who grew up online may struggle to understand evolving risks or feel too overwhelmed to take meaningful steps to protect themselves. The reality is that much of our personal information is already accessible to potential bad actors, but there are practical strategies we can all take to better manage and reduce our digital footprint.

This interactive workshop will explore the vital role information professionals play in promoting digital safety for both themselves and their patrons. Attendees will gain actionable tools and resources to help identify risks, respond effectively to security incidents when they occur, and take appropriate steps to recover and strengthen their digital security based on their individual risk levels.

Attendees will leave with:
- A list of practical tools and resources that can be used to determine the scope of a suspected security incident
- An understanding of basic security posture analysis and how to determine how much security is too much

The Parallels of Censorship: The Second Red Scare and Today
Friday October 9, 2026 8:00am - 8:50am PDT
"History repeats itself" is a phrase often thrown around during times of uncertainty and is particularly relevant today when considering attempts at censorship and threats to intellectual freedom in libraries across the United States. The Second Red Scare era was a time that defined intellectual freedom for the American people and the library's role in standing up against censorship attempts. Today, we are seeing similar attempts at censorship in our libraries across the US.
This session will explore how the role of the librarian was redefined during the Second Red Scare Era of American History when McCarthyism, fears of communism, fascism, and consumption of "Un-American" propaganda spread like wildfire across the nation. These fears led to countless censorship attempts from both private groups and governmental bodies against libraries. During this time, the ALA strengthened its authority by empowering librarians to promote intellectual freedom at their libraries and adopting the Library Bill of Rights and The Freedom to Read Statement.
The audience will explore the transformation of the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read Statements from their creation to how these documents are used in libraries today. We will consider the origins of the Library Bill of Rights by Des Moines librarian, Forrest B. Spaulding, in 1938, as a response to book banning. And its later revisions during the Second Red Scare to further promote intellectual freedom. Likewise, we will explore the roots of the Freedom to Read Statement and its creation as a response to groups attempting to censor materials in libraries deemed to be subversive and to further restrict intellectual freedom, and how this document is relevant today.

Participants will be able to identify the relevance of the Freedom to Read Statement and the Library Bill of Rights as they relate to issues of modern-day censorship attempts. Participants will be able to describe the parallels between the Cold War-era censorship in libraries and current-day censorship attempts. Participants will be able to evaluate modern censorship efforts and utilize the ALA, Library Bill of Rights, and the Freedom to Read Statement to help advocate for these efforts.

From Book List to Shared Experience: Programming with the Goldfinch and Iowa Children’s Choice
Friday October 9, 2026 10:30am - 11:20am PDT
This session is designed for both school librarians and children's services librarians who want to transform the upcoming Goldfinch Award and Iowa Children's Choice Award book lists into engaging experiences. Participants will explore adaptable storytimes, programs, and lesson plans aligned to next year's award titles. The session will include time for guided exploration of sample plans as well as a hands-on, creative work period in which participants can collaboratively design new programming ideas to take back to their libraries. These activities are intended to spark anticipation for reading, elevate visibility of award titles, and create a shared literary experience that bridges school and public libraries.

Participants are welcome to engage at a level that feels most comfortable: observing, participating actively, or moving between the two. The session emphasizes collegial collaboration, idea-sharing, and practical takeaways that can be immediately implemented.

Attendees will be able to identify strategies for using children’s choice literature to build anticipation and highlight new library materials. Apply collaborative approaches that bridge school and public library services through shared literary programming.

The Reluctant Mentor's Toolkit
Friday October 9, 2026 10:30am - 11:20am PDT
There's a mentor in you; let's talk about ways to help your inner expert shine through to help future librarians!

"I'd love to mentor, but I'm just too busy."

"I had a negative experience as a mentor/mentee - never again!"

If you've ever had one of these thoughts, then this is the session for you! We'll talk about some of the myths of mentoring that may be holding you back from pursuing the experience. We'll also explore how a fruitful mentoring relationship can work without overburdening your schedule. You will walk away from this session with your own mentorship plan in hand, ready to uplift the next generation of Iowa librarians!

Attendees will learn how to deconstruct myths about mentorship, find mentors who align with their expertise (and schedule), and maintain a fruitful relationship with their future mentee.
